An oxygen molecule is made from two oxygen
atoms (O2) while ozone is made from three atoms (O3). When exposed to an
electrical discharge (the corona discharge) three oxygen molecules can
turn into two ozone molecules. Ozone in smog differs from ozone generated
artificially in that smog-generated ozone is generated continuously by the
sun's action on hydrocarbons such as petroleum vapors and auto emissions.
Ozone made artificially lasts less than an hour when released into the
atmosphere where it reverts back into oxygen molecules. Ozone is used in
ponds, commercial swimming pools, aquaculture, municipal water supply
treatment and some indoor air cleaners. It is very safe for people, pets
and fish.
Ozone effectively oxidizes a variety of water borne contaminants without
leaving an undesirable residual, adding to total dissolved solids levels
or causing radical shifts in pH. Ozone is used to achieve a number of
water treatment goals, including disinfection and oxidation of both
inorganic and organic contaminants. Ozone is also an effective
pretreatment for improving the performance of subsequent water treatment
processes. Biological filters work better and ponds exhibit very little
long string algae or planktonic algae.
Ozone also disinfects the water through the inactivation of bacteria,
viruses and parasites. Ozone is also used to remove iron compounds and
manganese from the water. The problems normally associated with the
presence of these metals are more aesthetic than health related. |
